Families we've served

Every family is the final piece of a puzzle. Here are a few of theirs.

Names and identifying details have been changed or omitted. Our goal isn't to focus on what families have lived through, but on the home they're building now.

A polar bear named Stuffy

“The stuffed polar bear sits proudly on his new bed.”

A mother and her four-year-old son moved in after a last-minute Monday call that went out the night before at 9:04 pm. By the time the move was done and most of the crew had headed home, the boy stayed close to the few still finishing up. He asked someone to read him a book, and a volunteer sat down with him until he asked for a hug. The stuffed polar bear the Toy and Book Committee had set on his new bed got named, tentatively, “Stuffy.”

A home for two small boys

“We assured him that we were blessed with the ability to help.”

A father had spent months in shelters in DC and Maryland with his two young sons, two and five. The apartment was on a high floor of a Silver Spring building with notoriously tight security — getting a truck to the loading dock and furniture up the freight elevator took time. The crew got it done. By the next day, two teddy bears arrived in the mail.

The first book

“Before we could get her a chair, she sat against the wall and started reading.”

A mother and her two daughters, eight and nine, moved into an apartment in Gaithersburg on a rainy Memorial Day Saturday. While the volunteers were still carrying furniture in, the nine-year-old dug into the toy and book bag and found something she wanted to read. She didn't wait for a chair.
